I wonder if that is the same issue as I observed, but I am further complicating it by using a KVM switch. Pin wise, do the two PS/2 connectors work the same so it is possible to swap mouse and keyboard?

Ayep! If I plug in the keyboard into the mouse connector, and the mouse into the keyboard connector, the Next186 core detects both, also through the KVM.
